Obituary of Robert Drew Spangler

Robert Drew “Robbie” Spangler, cherished son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 14, 1963, in Tucson, Arizona, to Reuben B. Spangler and Mary Catherine Walker Spangler (Kitty).

Robbie graduated from Howenstine High School and lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and a deep commitment to his family and community. Despite facing challenges, including Down Syndrome, Robbie’s spirit remained resilient, and he touched the hearts of all who knew him.

After graduating from high school, Robbie began his career at Sun Tran, where he worked through Handlers of Tucson for over 20 years. He dedicated himself to cleaning the buses, ensuring they were safe and comfortable for passengers. Later, he transitioned to their day programs, continuing to contribute to his community in meaningful ways.

Robbie was an avid supporter of the University of Arizona, particularly basketball and football. He found immense joy in cheering on his beloved Wildcats and sharing the victories and defeats with his family and friends.

Throughout his life, Robbie was also an active participant in Special Olympics, competing in swimming, bowling, and track and field. He brought joy and inspiration to all who witnessed his dedication and determination.

Robbie’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family, particularly his sister, Cynthia Spangler-Padilla, and her husband, Bobby Padilla, as well as his nephews, Robert S. Padilla (Lauren) and Walker A. Padilla (Shayna), and his great nephews, Colton Padilla and Baker Padilla. His love and support for them knew no bounds, and he took immense pride in their achievements.

Robbie was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben B. Spangler and Mary Catherine Walker Spangler (Kitty). He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His infectious smile and wonderful laugh brightened the lives of those around him, leaving cherished memories that will be forever treasured.

A memorial service to celebrate Robbie’s life will be held on April 14, 2024, at Brings Funeral Home, located at 6910 East Broadway, Tucson, Arizona 85710, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Handlers of Tucson, Inc., at 527 West Simpson Street, Tucson, Arizona, 85701, in honor of Robbie’s memory.
